Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Latex Shortage: Malaysian Glove Association Calls for Relief Measures

The Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) has urged the Malaysian government to introduce temporary relief measures to address the shortage of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber latex (NBR). As a key feedstock for medical glove production, NBR supply has been disrupted by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which accounts for a significant portion of global raw materials for synthetic rubber. With Malaysia holding a substantial share of worldwide glove supply, this nitrile butadiene rubber shortage poses a serious threat to the global supply chain.

The repercussions of this shortage extend beyond Malaysia, impacting export markets including Vietnamese producers like Dang Quang Rubber, who rely on stable feedstock supplies to sustain operations. Surging material costs have escalated logistics and production expenses, squeezing margins across natural and synthetic rubber supply chains.

In the wake of heightened glove demand from recent pandemics, this scarcity could halt production lines and drive up end-product prices. MARGMA highlights that interventions such as import duty waivers or financial aid would stabilize the market and safeguard industry jobs.

The global rubber sector, including Vietnam's exporters, is closely monitoring developments, as they influence raw material economics. Companies like Dang Quang Rubber may need to diversify suppliers to mitigate risks from Middle East dependency on NBR.

The Malaysian government is evaluating MARGMA's proposals, aiming for swift actions to restore supply chain equilibrium. This situation underscores the need for international collaboration in the rubber industry to navigate geopolitical shocks.
